This scenic and accessible trek takes you to the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera located on the western slopes of the mountain, known for its wide-open landscapes and breathtaking views.
Accompanied by a professional local guide from Wild Gaze Safaris, you will hike through alpine meadows and moorland while enjoying panoramic views of Kibo Peak, the surrounding plains, and on clear days, views stretching toward Amboseli National Park in Kenya. The route is moderately challenging and suitable for travelers with a reasonable fitness level.
During the hike, you will explore key highlights of the plateau, including the impressive Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rock formation rising from the volcanic landscape. The area is also home to unique high-altitude flora such as giant lobelias and senecios, and occasionally wildlife such as buffaloes and elephants.
A picnic lunch is served on the plateau, allowing you to relax and enjoy the spectacular alpine scenery before beginning the descent. After the hike, you will return to Moshi in the late afternoon, completing a memorable day on Africa’s highest mountain.
