Overview
What makes this journey special
A short boat ride from Dar es Salaam to a protected island beach – snorkelling, a forest trail and grilled seafood on the sand.
Bongoyo Island lies just off the Msasani Peninsula, inside the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserves. The boat from the Slipway takes around 30 minutes, making it the easiest beach escape from the city.
The island is uninhabited, with a sheltered beach on its western side, coral for snorkelling and a short nature trail through coastal bush where you may see coconut crabs. Simple beach shelters serve grilled fish and seafood.
It is a perfect day before a flight, between safaris or for families staying in Dar es Salaam.
