Overview
What makes this journey special
A full day in northern Zanzibar – snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, the turtle lagoon at Nungwi and an afternoon on Kendwa beach.
Nungwi, Matemwe and Kendwa are villages on the northern tip of Zanzibar. This day combines the best of the area: snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, a walk through Nungwi village and free time on one of the island’s finest beaches.
Mnemba is a protected coral atoll about half an hour by boat from Matemwe beach. Its reefs shelter turtles, shoals of reef fish and, often, pods of dolphins, and the water is clear enough for first-time snorkellers.
In Nungwi you visit the Baraka Natural Aquarium, a tidal pool carved into the coral rock where rescued sea turtles are cared for, and see dhows being built by hand on the beach. The day ends at Kendwa, where the tide barely retreats and swimming is good at any hour.
