A rare Southern Highlands journey from the orchid meadows of Kitulo Plateau – UNESCO’s “Serengeti of Flowers” – down through tea country to the lively city of Mbeya, with one night on the plateau.
Kitulo National Park protects one of Africa’s most extraordinary highland landscapes – rolling grasslands at 2,600 metres draped in wildflowers between December and April, with over 350 vascular plant species including 45 varieties of terrestrial orchid. The plateau is also a birding paradise: the endangered blue swallow, Denham’s bustard, and mountain marsh widow are among the specials regularly recorded here.
After a night at a simple plateau camp or guesthouse, the journey continues through the Southern Highlands’ tea estates and pine forests to Mbeya – a vibrant regional hub with German colonial architecture, bustling markets, and dramatic viewpoints over the Rift Valley escarpment. Bismarck Rock, Lake Ngozi, and the Livingstone Mountains are all within easy reach on Day 2.
This one-day excursion departs from Iringa or from your designated pick-up point, delivers a full day of game driving through the park including lunch inside the park, and returns you to Iringa by evening with a classic African sunset to close out the experience.
Your driver-guide collects you from Mbeya or Iringa after breakfast for the ascent to Kitulo National Park (approx. 2–3 hours from Mbeya, 4 hours from Iringa). After park formalities, a guided walk across the open montane grasslands reveals why UNESCO calls this the “Serengeti of Flowers” – in season, the plateau is carpeted in orchids, lobelias, asters and red-hot pokers. Your naturalist guide points out endemic birds including the blue swallow and Denham’s bustard. A packed lunch is served at a viewpoint overlooking the Kipengere Range. The afternoon continues with a gentle waterfall trail through montane forest before you settle in at Kitulo Plateau Camp or a nearby guesthouse for dinner and your overnight stay under crisp highland skies.
An optional pre-breakfast walk catches the plateau in early light when mist lifts from the valleys and bird activity peaks. After checkout, the descent through pine forests and tea plantations brings you into Mbeya by late morning. Your guide leads a relaxed city orientation: the central market (best on Thursday and Saturday), German-era architecture around the old boma, and the famous Bismarck Rock balancing on its narrow base above the city. Lunch is at a local restaurant serving fresh highland trout and Tanzanian staples. If time allows, continue to the Matema Road viewpoint for sweeping Rift Valley panoramas before hotel or airport drop-off in Mbeya by late afternoon.
This tour can start in Mbeya or Iringa and ends in Mbeya. We handle all ground transfers in a private 4×4.
