6 Days — Big 5 of Selous & Ruaha

Six action-packed days through two of Tanzania's most spectacular southern wilderness areas — a boat safari on the Rufiji River in Selous, followed by full-day game drives deep into Ruaha National Park's vast Miombo woodland and river circuits.

Big Five + Wild Dogs
6 Days / 5 Nights
Selous + Ruaha
1 – 12 Persons

This six-day expedition combines two of southern Tanzania's greatest wilderness parks into a single seamless journey — beginning with two thrilling days in the vast Selous Game Reserve (now officially Nyerere National Park), then driving west into the ancient landscape of Ruaha National Park for three more days of deep-bush game driving. It is the definitive southern circuit safari: two completely distinct ecosystems, one expert driver-guide, and the kind of Big Five encounters that only Tanzania's less-travelled south can deliver.

Selous opens the safari with a boat ride along the Rufiji River — one of the great wildlife spectacles of East Africa. Enormous pods of hippopotamus surface alongside the boat, Nile crocodiles bask on the banks, and fish eagles call from ancient fig trees. On land, the open flood plains and dense woodlands of Selous support the largest lion population in Africa, and the reserve is one of the last strongholds of the African wild dog. Elephant herds move freely across its 50,000 square kilometres — larger than Switzerland — giving a sense of scale and wildness found almost nowhere else.

The overland drive to Ruaha passes through Tanzania's highland interior — a journey through coffee country, baobab-dotted hills, and the bustling regional town of Iringa before descending into the Great Ruaha River valley. In Ruaha, the safari shifts to a different register: drier, more dramatic, with larger elephant concentrations, formidable lion prides, and the dry-country antelopes — greater kudu, sable, roan, and fringe-eared oryx — that define the Miombo ecosystem. With 571 recorded bird species and some of the finest walking safari terrain in Africa, Ruaha rewards every hour spent inside its boundaries.

Dar es Salaam → Selous Game Reserve
Pick-up after breakfast · ~218 km / 6 hrs · Arrive for lunch · Evening boat safari

After breakfast at your hotel, your driver-guide meets you for a pre-departure briefing covering Selous's remarkable ecology and the activities ahead. Depart Dar es Salaam and drive south-west through the coastal lowlands and Morogoro region towards the reserve — approximately 218 km and six hours of driving through increasingly wild countryside. Arrive at Hippo Camp in time for a hot lunch before the camp's resident hippos doze on the far bank. The afternoon brings the safari's first highlight: an evening boat safari along the Rufiji River. Drifting silently past sandbanks crowded with crocodiles, pods of hippos surfacing just metres from the boat, and fish eagles perched in riverside trees, this is one of East Africa's most intimate wildlife experiences. Return to Hippo Camp for dinner and overnight.

Full Day Game Drive — Selous Game Reserve
Depart 7:00am · Full day circuits · Bush picnic lunch · Overnight at Hippo Camp

An early breakfast at first light and departure at 7:00am with packed lunch boxes for a full day exploring Selous's extraordinary diversity. Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa — more than 50,000 square kilometres of woodland, flood plain, lake, and river — and holds the continent's greatest concentration of lions. This full day covers the open plains around the lakes and the Rufiji flood plain, where enormous elephant herds gather at permanent water, buffalo concentrate in their hundreds, and giraffes, zebra, and impala move through the scattered woodland. Selous is a stronghold of the African wild dog, and sightings on the reserve's open plains are among the most sought-after in all of East Africa. Return to Hippo Camp for dinner and a final night beside the river.

Selous → Iringa Town (Overnight)
Early departure · Via Morogoro · Scenic highland drive · Late arrival Iringa

An early morning departure from Selous with packed lunch boxes for the long overland drive to Iringa — the highland town that serves as gateway to Ruaha. The route runs north-west via Morogoro town before climbing into Tanzania's beautiful interior: coffee estates, terraced farmland, granite kopjes, and sweeping valley views replace the coastal lowlands as altitude rises. Lunch is taken mid-journey at a scenic stop. The drive is long — approximately eight hours — but the countryside is genuinely beautiful and offers a real sense of Tanzania's geographic diversity. Arrive in Iringa in the evening for dinner and overnight at a hotel or lodge, ready for the transition to Ruaha National Park the following morning.

Iringa → Ruaha National Park — Full Day Game Drive
Depart 8:00am · Arrive midday · Full afternoon circuits · Overnight Hilltop Lodge

Depart Iringa after breakfast and drive south-west towards Ruaha National Park, arriving at the entrance gate around midday after a scenic 115 km approach through the Iringa highlands. The afternoon brings an immediate transition into Ruaha's spectacular river valley landscape: the Great Ruaha River draws huge elephant herds — sometimes 50 to 200 animals at a single gathering — and the river banks host hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a parade of plains game throughout the day. Ruaha's lion prides are exceptional in size and confidence; encounters from the vehicle at close range are common. Greater and lesser kudu, wildebeest, zebra, hartebeest, impala, and giraffe complete a first remarkable afternoon in the park. Return to Hilltop Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Full Day + Walking Safari — Ruaha National Park
Depart 7:00am · AM & PM game drives · 3-hr afternoon walking safari · Lodge overnight

The most immersive day of the safari opens before dawn with an early game drive — nocturnal predators are still active at first light, and the golden hour transforms Ruaha's Miombo woodland into one of Africa's most beautiful landscapes. A morning of deep bush circuits follows, covering the river channels, sand rivers, and open woodland where Ruaha's extraordinary diversity of dry-country specialists — sable antelope, roan antelope, fringe-eared oryx, and bat-eared fox — can be found alongside the classic Big Five. The afternoon delivers something rare in Tanzanian safari tourism: a three-hour guided walking safari in the bush. On foot with an armed ranger, the scale of the landscape changes entirely — tracks, dung, smells, and sounds become the primary language of the wilderness. Return to the lodge for dinner and final overnight at Hilltop Lodge.

Ruaha → Dar es Salaam (Return)
Breakfast · Packed lunch · Exit game drive · ~8 hrs · Evening arrival Dar es Salaam

A final breakfast at the lodge before an 8:30am departure with packed picnic lunch boxes. The exit route through Ruaha is a game drive in itself — animals are active in the morning hours, and the drive to the park gate frequently yields final memorable sightings: crocodiles sunning on river banks, monitor lizards basking on sun-warmed rocks, agama lizards on the kopjes, and the possibility of a last lion sighting in the early morning light. Depart through the gate and begin the long return drive to Dar es Salaam — approximately eight hours including a lunch break. Your driver-guide delivers you to your hotel or Julius Nyerere International Airport in the evening, in good time for onward connections. Six days, two of Africa's greatest parks, and a southern circuit safari that leaves the northern crowds far behind.
